Do you have an outrageous desire to do something that if you actually said it aloud your friends and family would either a) look at you crazy or b) think your idea is impossible to accomplish?
Or maybe you are feeling the Holy Spirit calling you toward a whole new direction in your life, and you have the mind weed of, “Who am I to think I can do this? Certainly there is someone more qualified or capable than me?”
Well, imagine that right now I am grabbing your hands and looking you in the eyes as I say this: God has chosen YOU! He knows every one of your strengths and yep, he even knows your weaknesses. But guess what? He knows you can handle whatever it is He is calling you to do.
Still have your doubts? Stay with me.
I know it’s not Christmas, but it was Mother’s Day last Sunday so let’s look at the Virgin Mary and her story.
When God chose the Mother of our Lord, did He go to the palaces and great cities to find someone in high society with refined breeding? No.
God chose Mary to bear His Son who would save the world from sin and death. So who was Mary?
- A young teenage girl. (Was practically a child herself still).
- A virgin. (Had no prior experience as a mother).
- A humble hand-maiden. (Not white collar, but blue collar)
- Was from Nazareth (An unglamorous, hick town. Even Jesus’ disciple, Nathanael, when he first was told about Jesus from Nazareth, he said, “Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?).
- Was engaged to Joseph (She already had plans for her life).
From a worldly perspective, can you see how all these facts would be perfect excuses for Mary to bow out of this Holy calling? I bet her peers were thinking that certainly God could have found a better candidate to be the mother of Jesus.
I ask you, are you talking yourself out of the pull of the Holy Spirit in your life? Are you looking for excuses such as:
- You’re too young or You’re too old
- You have no experience
- You aren’t made for greatness.
- People from your town just don’t do the extraordinary
- This deviates from the plans you had for your life
Just like God knew that Mary could handle the responsibility and the purpose He called her to, God knows that YOU can handle what He is leading you to do.
Now, you may be uncertain of HOW God is going to make your dreams or your calling happen when all you can see are limitations.
Even Mary wondered how she was going to give birth to a son. In Luke 1: 34, it says,
“Mary said to the Angel, ‘But how? I’ve never slept with a man.'”
What was the angel Gabriel’s response to her “How” question? First, he told her the power of the Holy Spirit would come upon her. (It will be God’s miracle-nothing she had to do).
But I love how Gabriel goes one step further and says in verse 36,
“And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! Nothing, you see, is impossible with God.”
He reminded Mary of another miracle God had performed. All I can imagine is Gabriel saying that with one hand on his hip and finishing his reminder by snapping his fingers above his head for emphasis!
That’s all Mary needed to hear because the next thing she said was:
“Yes! I see it now; I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve…”
Now, just because a member of the Heavenly Host hasn’t appeared to you, doesn’t mean that God isn’t calling you. His Holy Spirit is within you, guiding you! It’s okay to ask God “how,” but just know you probably aren’t going to get a detailed plan. It is going to be a glorious, miraculous unfolding in your life in God’s time.
And if you still have doubts about God’s ability to do the impossible, go to your earthly angels (your Christian friends), and I bet they can remind you of all the ways God has worked miracles in your life. Then just like Mary, you can say, “Yes! I see it now! Lord, I’m ready to serve!”
