A huge sticking point for the people we work with when it comes to their vision is worrying about “the How.”
It’s one thing to discover your vision and get clear on your goals and dreams, but it’s a whole other thing to look at your vision and think “how can I do this?”
It’s “the how” that gets people tripped up, frustrated, and discouraged. Our human nature wants answers immediately. We want to be able to plan, and we are constantly trying to predict the future. If we can’t figure it out, we then assume our vision isn’t meant to be, so we give up and settle for the status quo.
For me personally, if I’m not staying present and connected with God, those mind weeds can sneak up on me faster than fat grams at Thanksgiving.
So how do we pursue our vision AND not worry about “the how?” Here are 3 ways to combat the frustration of the “how” of your vision:
- Keep a constant reminder of who God is and the role He has in your vision. The discouragement comes when you think you have to figure out the “how” on your own, and fail to put God front and center.
Look what God says in Isaiah 55: 8-9 (MSG):
“I don’t think the way you think.
The way you work isn’t the way I work.”
“For as the sky soars high above earth,
so the way I work surpasses the way work,
and the way I think is beyond the way you think.”
God doesn’t think or work the way we do- He surpasses beyond what we think needs to happen in order to live our vision, and praise God he doesn’t think like you and me!
So when you find yourself brainstorming and getting nowhere, stop and refocus on God. Print this out and keep this in a place where you can see it at all times.
- Prayer AND meditation. Humbly, boldly and faithfully in prayer ask God to reveal His ideas, His answers, and His solutions that pertain to your vision. Be specific! But don’t stop there. Set aside time during the day for meditation. Prayer is where we talk to God, but I think of meditation as when God talks to us. He needs your mind to be empty so He can reveal his guidance so you can discern what His Spirit is telling you.

- Just stay present. What is one thing you can do today for your vision? Is it a phone call you can make, is it an email you can send? Is it some research you can do?
When we pray The Lord’s Prayer, we ask “give us this day our daily bread.” Jesus didn’t teach us to pray, “Give us this day my yearly bread.”
Your “daily bread” – includes not just physical needs of money, clothes, shelter…etc.., but it also includes God’s answers and God’s “how” to your vision. He will reveal what you need to know just for “today.”
Here’s the thing. God is working behind the scenes in your life, you can’t see it now, but He will reveal to you what you need to know and what you need to do WHEN it’s the right time. This is what your faith is all about!
It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going.- 2 Corinthians 5:7 (MSG)
Trust in God’s faithfulness to you, your purpose, and your vision- trust that He is in charge of your “how” even if you can’t see it yet.
